Musical Instruments
This afternoon, on our way to the boys' Mandarin class, we were chatting as usual. S2 mentioned that he's also learning to play the Recorder. "What song can you play now?, I asked.
"Don't know any song. Just learn to be annoying", retorted S2. "We just put our mouths onto the thingy and blow. Very noisy and annoying. The people always wash one. Must wash the recorder cause lots of saliva go inside!".
I can IMAGINE the PEEEE PAAAAA POOOO in a classroom full of novice players! Sure si-beh ANNOYING! Don't know how the teacher can tahan!
Math
Made the boys do some Math problems yesterday (before High School Musical 2), and as usual S1 made a helluva lot of mistakes. Terrible me...started to raise my voice and S1 was like "Stop shouting! You are STRESSING me out!". You see lah. A little bit like that, STRESS-OUT wor. And then later, you know what? He said he MUST do some BRAIN GYM so that he can work better and faster, and proceeded to stand and do some funny stance like a standing meditation kind. ALAMAK!! What is this rubbish? Go to British school learn this kind of stuff! (Pardon Me! If I offend any British or ang-mohs here) My time certainly got NO such thing!! Anyway, my kids don't go to KUMON. Am thinking if I should send them or not? Is it really necessary? Will they lose out if they don't go to KUMON? I'm thinking if me tutoring (screaming?) them would be sufficient. Or not? What do you say?

Brain gym... that's new to me ;p
But I can identify with how you feel, because my almost 7-year-old will come up with all kinds of excuses and be very distracted during homework time, even if it's a simple Math worksheet that can be easily done and gotten out of the way.
Kumon or not (sorry, can't give my 2 cents' worth, as haven't tried it back in Singapore or here, but I know some parents swear by it), it will mean one more after-school activity for your boys.
haha
Misha also learning recorder in Music class this week :)
Kumon : Misha studied for a year in KL then 2 months in HK, decided to stop - prefer to give her from home ie from workbook OR those that I typed :)
Nomadic Mom, cannot compare liow.
Kids these days are different from those days (not implying you are old).
When my son was learning Suzuki method piano, I was yelling at him and he said the same thing, "You frighten me so I keep making the same mistake". Somedays, my husband would come home from work to see him in tears and suggested I move him to traditional method so that I don't have to sit with him. :P
Kumon, I highly recommend. Both my kids were on it and their mental addition was beyong description, especially my son who did it without stopping whereas my daughter kept stopping and starting (not consistent).
Ang mor schools believe in learning from touch, feel, look....you will be amazed what gets in and stays in. :) Not the learning by heart method.
I understand for Kumon, you should start early - like before the kids turn 6. If not, they will not benefit as much from it. Aiyo! why stress them out. Kids must enjoy childhood. The most successful people need not be the ones that do extremely well - in fact I find that those usually lack EQ, which is very impt to succeed in life. Teach them life skills!! Yeah!
your side also got disney channel ?
everyone talked about high school musical 2 here!
bp - Kinda get tired and fed-up NAGGING them to do their work. I feel like a radio recorder! As for KUMON, maybe go for trial class first.
Misha's Mum - Is Recorder in the Year 3 Syllabus? Waaaa...you so hardworking! Typed out worksheets? I just scribble into their exercise book!
Judy - Yeah. Sometimes I find that I get irritated when he does SILLY mistakes, and tend to be louder. And the louder I get, the more stressed he became! As for KUMON, my older one is very MUCH AGAINST going to Kumon. I am scared that FORCING him would be counter-productive, and there would be more stress for us as I would have to SIT down with him to make sure he does his daily worksheets. How like that? I Do agree that ang-moh schools have alot of pros but think the "international" factor has some cons lor.
Stay-at-Home Mum - My older one already past 10 liow. So definitely much more difficult to coax him to go. As for younger one, maybe lah..
Huisia - Yup. Disney, Nicklelodean, Cartoon Network, and also WAH LAI TOI now...ever since I subscribed to Astro.
heard there was earthquake near your CITY ... are you ok?
really ah,
kids nowadays are damn stress leh. pity them also..must keep 'upgradin' themselves..
"recorder" not in the Y3 syllabus BUT will use it during MUSIC class. Today the school after CAS (curriculum after school. Misha will be attending choir and Writers' Workhshop :)
S2's school has CAS? OR something like that?
Misha's Mum - Didn't feel the earthquake. It's off Sumatera But H got news quite quick as he's in the infrastructure business.
Shern's Mom - Yeah. Loads of EXTRAS available these days...KUMON, ENOPI, MUSIC, ART, SPORTS, ETC ETC... Not only the kids get stressed, the mother also get stressed as need to ferry them, and to nag them to practise or do worksheets etc etc.
Misha's Mum - Yeah. S2 doing recorder during MUSIC lessons too. Waaaa...Choir and Writer's Workshop!! Very Good!
School does have quite a varied choice of after-school activities. But as Mondays and Thursdays are their MANDARIN days, I have to cross those days out.
There's nothing much interesting on Tuesdays, so the boys will have FREE Tuesdays.
Wednesdays - S2 will take up Tae-Kwondo. As for S1, he was supposed to...but changed his mind to Badminton as he said most of his friends will be doing badminton. So...I don't know him lah.
Fridays - Told boys to do swimming on this day, so that I dont' have to come to school for Swimming classes on Thursday...But S2 wants to do football? I also donno them lah.
hahaha .. so many activities. As for this term, Misha will only attend Choir/Writer's workshop ie on thursday/wed .. other days quite free.. but have to come back to do homework ..
Mandarin? Nah .. not taking extra classes since in school she will have 5 hours of Mandarin per week, so, i think it is enoughlar.
Misha's Mum - The mandarin offered at school is very basic. Too basic for S1. So have to do external mandarin. Only 3 hours a week. Not enough still. S1 is taking up Japanese at school instead.
As for S2, foreign languages not offered yet.
lots of activities .. hehehe :)
